Non-Board Members in Attendance: Many, since this Board meeting was held immediately following a General Meeting.

The meeting was called to order at 2 p.m. by President Miyako Tanaka Price. It was determined that there were enough board members in attendance to form a quorum.

President Miyako Tanaka Price asked the regional federations to revalidate their representatives. A letter will be going out to the regional offices in the near future reiterating this request. Northern California Naginata Federation said they were naming Maureen Hawk to replace Malyne Chiu, who takes over as Executive Secretary. All other NCNF representatives remain the same.

Kyu Examiner Pool for 2001

The Board took up the selection of the new pool of Kyu examiners that it had tabled the day before. Kevin Saxton said that he felt the 12 month time frame of the requirements is too narrow. The United States is a large country and our events are too few to enable everyone to travel to one event outside their region every year. Many other members agreed with his comments. Miyako Tanaka Price recommended making the period for attending a USNF event three years and making the regional event on the USNF calendar in or out of a person's region in the last 12 months. A question was raised whether we ought to add a teaching requirement. Several people discussed previous requirements. Miyako asked that her recommendations be written up and distributed to the Board to consider for the next Board Meeting. For this year, we need to abide by the standing requirements.

Vice-President Kurt Schmucker asked if any federation wished to amend their list of proposed examiners at this time. Southern California Naginata Federation removed Cathy Mikuni. Northem California Naginata Federation removed Temuchin Lowe and Johana Weber. Kurt moved that the Board make an exception to the rules in the case of Yamauchi Sensei (ECNF). In favor: 11, Against: 0, Abstain: 0. The Board then decided to vote on the lists by region.

The SCNF proposed list is voted on. In favor: 10, Against: 0, Abstain: 1 (Bob Peterson).

The RMNF proposed list is voted on. In favor: 11, Against: 0, Abstain: 0

The ECNF proposed list is voted on. In favor: 11, Against: 0, Abstain: 0

The NCNF proposed list is voted on. In favor: 11, Against: 0, Abstain: 0

Marcia Toyohara moved that the Board accept the voted on list as the new list of Kyu examiners. Fran Vall seconded the motion.

Proposal for Mixed Teams in USNF Championships

Fran Vall's proposal from the previous day is explained to members not present at that meeting. Another discussion of the proposal takes place, in which it is brought out that a team of one person is permissable, even if they cannot win. This situation seems to resolve the issue for the Board, although the item will remain on the agenda for the next Board meeting in June.

Fran Vall moved to adjourn the meeting. Karen Schmucker seconded the motion. All are in favor. Against: 0, Abstain: 0. The meeting is adjourned at 2:45 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Karen Yesowich Schmucker

Recording Secretary, USNF
