History of the All Japan Naginata Federation and the International Naginata Federation

May 1953

The organizing committee for the All Japan Naginata Federation is formed.

May 1955

The All Japan Naginata Federation is formed.

April 1956

The First All Japan Naginata Federation Championship tournament is held. This tournament is still held each year.

May 1959

The First Inter-Prefectural Naginata Federation Championship tournament is held. This tournament is still held each year.

August 1962

The First (All Japan) Student Naginata Tournament is held. This tournament is still held each year.

April 1968

With the authorization of the Japanese Ministry of Education, the All Japan Naginata Federation becomes a foundation.

July 1971

The First (All Japan) Naginata Engi Tournament is held. (Engi is a type of Naginata kata.) This tournament is still held each year.

May 1977

The All Japan Naginata Federation (Standard Naginata) Kata were formed and standardized. This kata is now studied worldwide.

June 1978

The All Japan Naginata Federation becomes a member of the Japan Amateur Sports Committee.

August 1978

The First Young Peoples Budo (Naginata) Tournament is held. This tournament is still held each year.

November 1979

The All Japan Naginata Federation becomes semi-affiliated with the All Japan High School Sports Federation

May 1980

The 25th anniversary of the All Japan Naginata Federation is celebrated with a tournament in Kumamoto. The United States Naginata Federation participates in this tournament.

April 1981

The official Naginata refereeing system is established.

September 1981

The 'Concept of Naginata' and the 'Guiding Principles of Naginata' statements are established

October 1983

Naginata is included for the first time in the "38th Citizens Autumn Sports Tournament" held in Gunma.
